The Dutch Red Cross Commerorative Cross was instituted on 6 February 1942 to recognise service to the Dutch Red Cross during the mobilisation of September 1939 to May 1940 and the May 1940 campaign following the attack on the Netherlands by Nazi Germany. Only approximately 5,450 awards of the bronze cross were issued.
